What Is Poly Lumber Made From?

Authentic poly lumber is made from recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastics. Water bottles, laundry soap containers, and milk jugs are some of the more common items that are recycled to produce poly lumber. Poly lumber can contain as high as 98% recycled material.

Purchasing items constructed with poly lumber is eco-friendly, resulting in a win for the environment. Not to mention the durable beauty poly will add to your outdoor living space. Learn More About The Recyling Process

HDPE is safe, extremely durable, weather-resistant, and easy to clean, making it the ideal material for building outdoor décor and furniture.

Poly lumber is available in an assortment of vibrant colors. The color you see it not just a veneer, it is consistent throughout the material. This is accomplished by blending UV inhibitors, color pigment, and other protective compounds with the plastic during the manufacturing process. Since the color saturates the plastic it ensures long-lasting, vibrant hues of color for many years to come.

Poly Lumber FAQS

What is HDPE?
HDPE stands for high-density polyethylene which is an extremely durable and reusable plastic which can be found in many common household items from milk jugs to poly deck lumber.

Does your poly lumber contain recycled materials?
Yes our poly lumber can contain up to 98% recycled material making our poly outdoor products eco-friendly. Read more about eco-friendly poly.

Does poly lumber contain natural wood fibers?
No, our poly lumber is made from HDPE plastic material.

Does the color of poly lumber run all the way through the material?
Yes, light-stable pigments, UV inhibitors, and other protectants are blended with the HDPE plastic during the manufacturing process. The color you see on the surface is consistent throughout the material.

Does poly lumber fade?
The light-stable pigments and UV inhibitors in our poly lumber will keep your colors vibrant and fade-resistant for years to come. That being said, all poly will fade slightly over time, claims to the contrary simply aren't true.

Our poly lumber is designed to stay within 5∆E from the initial color manufactured for a period of 5 years. This is not detectable to most customers and is in line with industry standards, representing a relatively small change over a long lifetime.

Can I paint my poly lumber?
Poly lumber colors are saturated throughout the material, and it is naturally waterproof, so no painting is required. If you desire to change the color, there are companies who claim to have a paint that will adhere to poly lumber but we do not recommend painting poly.

Can poly lumber be sanded?

Sanding poly lumber is not recommended as it will scratch the surface of the material.
