Why Poly Lighthouses Are Best For Tropical Climates

A tropical climate such as the one found in the southern regions of Florida can be very destructive to lawn decor, garden lighthouses, and other items exposed its effects. One could reasonably assume when you combine considerable amounts of rainfall, humid conditions, sea breeze, sweltering sunshine, and pesky insects with lawn decorations the former would win the war. Tired of trying to rescue your garden lighthouse from the jaws of pesky insects? Getting fed up with the maintenance it takes to preserve your wooden lighthouse on the dock?

Our premier Poly Garden Lighthouse was designed to solve the maintenance issues a tropical climate creates. Consider the advantages of a premier poly lighthouse; poly lumber is not impacted by moisture, it can withstand temperatures up to 400 degrees, is UV resistant, salt breeze has no impact on it, and insects have no use for it. Advantages of Hybrid Garden Lighthouses for Florida Residents

The beauty of a natural wood garden lighthouse illuminating a path at dusk, or casting its light on the dock against the black backdrop of the sea is stunning. Unfortunately the coastal breeze and humid climate of a Florida summer have an adverse effect on any wood items exposed to the elements and to soon the beauty of a wood garden lighthouse gives way to deterioration... It was with the intent of extending the life expectancy of a wood garden lighthouse that the Hybrid Garden Lighthouse was born.

What years of experience have taught us is that the base of the lighthouse where it makes contact with the ground, and the top of the lighthouse are the areas that deteriorate the quickest. A hybrid lighthouse is when we make the top and the base of the lighthouse out of poly to eliminate the deterioration there, but the tower of the lighthouse is still made out of wood to allow for a spiral stripe design. So a hybrid lighthouse is a blend of wood and poly which allows for more flexibility in designs but has a longer life expectancy than a traditional wood lighthouse.

The advantages of a hybrid garden lighthouse are a longer life expectancy in a coastal environment while still allowing the flexibility that wood brings to design.

For Florida residents we highly recommend hybrid garden lighthouses when purchasing models that feature a spiral stripe design like the St. Augustine lighthouse replica, or numerous stripes like the Assateague model.

Featured Lighthouse: St. Augustine

The St. Augustine lighthouse stands at the north end of Anastasia Island in St. Augustine, Florida and was built between 1871 and 1874. According to some archived records and maps, this "official" American lighthouse was placed on the site of a watchtower built earlier by the Spanish as early as in the late 16th century.

The tower is still a functioning lighthouse to this day and ships located offshore use the lighthouse for navigation purposes. In the daytime, ships can see the unique daymark, a black and white barber pole stripe with a bright red top. At night the ships can tell that they are near to the coast of St. Augustine by the one, fixed white flash that occurs every 30 seconds which is the nightmark. Read More...

Pros and Cons of Wood Lighthouses

What are the advantages to buying a wood garden lighthouse? Wood lighthouses are considerably cheaper than poly or stone models, making them the economical choice. The second advantage to a wood lighthouse over stone or poly is the larger selection of designs. Since wood can be painted and the others can't, a wood lighthouse design is open to any color palette or design you want. Just grab a can of paint and create a custom design.

The disadvantage to wood lighthouses is their shorter life expectancy. Though our Amish craftsman do everything they can in the construction process to prevent the wood from absorbing moisture, over time the wood will take on moisture and begin to deteriorate. Life expectancy under normal conditions is 7-10 years for a wood lighthouse, several years less in wet locations.

Garden Lighthouse FAQ's

Why Can't I Get All Lighthouse Designs In Poly?
Poly and wood lumber have their color added with 2 totally different approaches. With wood lumber, paint in the desired colors is applied to the exterior of the lumber. Since the design/pattern is done with paint, it means the design possibilities are almost endless.

Poly lumber has the color added as a dye when the poly lumber is being manufactured. The advantage to this is the color is consistent throughout the material, meaning if you scratch the surface, you have the same color underneath and there is no need to refinish it. Since the color is part of the lumber itself and not added to the surface, design capabilities are limited.

For example, you can’t have the spiral stripe of the Cape Hatteras or the St. Augustine lighthouse in a poly garden lighthouse. It would not be possible or cost effective to try and recreate a spiral stripe out of poly. Unfortunately, because poly doesn’t allow paint to adhere to it consistently, design possibilities are somewhat limited.

In cases where the design desired is not available in poly, and the climate you live in is not condusive to a wood lighthouse, we recommend our Hybrid Garden Lighthouse.

What Is The Life Expectancy Of A Garden Lighthouse?
The lifespan of a wooden lighthouse is largely dependent upon the environment in which it is placed and the care it is given. In the optimum environment a wooden lighthouse can be expected to last 7-10 years with some surviving longer. However in the worst environments the life span can be shortened by several years.

Poly lighthouses have a life expectancy of 20-30 years in most environments.
